With its three brands BMW, MINI and Rolls‐Royce, the BMW Group is the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles and also provides premium financial and mobility services. As a global company, the BMW Group operates 31 production and assembly facilities in 14 countries and has a global sales network in more than 140 countries. In 2016, the BMW Group sold approximately 2.367 million cars and nearly 145,000 motorcycles worldwide. As of 31 December 2016, the BMW Group had a workforce of 124,729 employees.
Long‐term thinking and responsible conduct lay the foundation for the BMW Group’s economic success. The company has firmly established environmental and social sustainability throughout its value chain. This also includes comprehensive product responsibility and a clear commitment to resource conservation. BMW actions are aimed at shaping the mobility of the future and securing leading position as a successful company. Electrification and digitalisation are two of the main driving forces for the future. Over the next few years, these factors will change the automotive industry more than anything we have seen over the past 100 years.
BMW recognised the direction the industry was going from automobile manufacturer to provider of the individual premium mobility and services of tomorrow. The BMW Group can look back on one hundred years of history and will continue to take responsibility in the future – when it comes to both technology and society.
Role in the project
BMW will support defining relevant traffic scenarios and high level user requirements for the interACT system. In cooperation with all partners, we will determine human-vehicle interaction strategies for the interACT autonomous vehicles and develop, based on experiences from the projects interactIVe and AdaptIVe, a specific design solution for the interaction with other traffic partners and the driver on-board. To show the interACT solutions in a show-car, BMW will allocate a demonstrator vehicle with focus on explicit communication and integrate components from the partner HELLA. BMW will support the subsequent evaluation by providing the demonstrator vehicle and a test track as well as by contributing to the evaluation methodology.
As part of the project-management team, BMW will lead the Innovation Management and therefore is responsible for IPR related issues and the final plan to bring the interACT solutions into the market.
